Description
It all begins, fittingly enough, with that most fiercely driven of composers, Beethoven. He wrote this joyous, virtuosic trio as he was beginning to achieve fame, and it reflects the continuing influence of Mozart, whom he revered. Schumann composed his piano quartet while under the influence of his love for – and wariness of being overshadowed by – wife Clara, as well as his encroaching mental illness. Holliger’s works were a response to the “outrageous” destruction of Schumann’s pieces by Clara, who feared they would ruin her husband’s reputation and reveal his insanity. Penderecki’s energetic trio recalls the musical language of late Bartók.
