At Mandel Jewish Community Center of Cleveland’s Camp Wise in Claridon Township, a Jewish Federation of Cleveland beneficiary agency, hundreds of children arrive each summer ready for the simple joys of Jewish camp – friendship, nature, discovery and belonging. Ensuring that those moments remain safe, even in a changing world, requires both vigilance and creativity. That’s why this year, the Jewish Federation of Cleveland and JFC Security, LLC – Federation’s security provider – introduced a cutting-edge, tethered drone pilot program at Camp Wise — an innovative step that reflects thoughtful, proactive planning.

Operated by trained personnel, the drone provides real-time, high-resolution visibility across a wide perimeter from its vantage point above camp. It enhances the work of security professionals on the ground and complements other recent upgrades, including a staffed guard gate and strengthened access controls. Most campers barely notice it; those who do say it makes them feel even safer. The goal is simple: strike the right balance between vigilance and peace of mind so camp can remain the carefree, joyful environment it’s meant to be.

The pilot is already demonstrating meaningful impact. The lessons learned may guide future enhancements across other Federation-supported sites, helping create a consistent, modern approach to safety throughout Jewish Cleveland. It’s one of the many ways we’re ensuring that children, families and community members can live and engage Jewishly without fear.

This same commitment to preparedness drives the broader work of JFC Security, LLC, which was established to help protect Jewish life throughout our region. Today, JFC Security delivers 24/7 coverage to more than 60 synagogues, schools, camps and community institutions. Our community benefits daily from regular patrols, on-site assessments and close coordination with local law enforcement. In addition to the visible presence of trained officers, JFC Security offers free, ongoing safety training for all community members, covering everything from situational awareness to active threat response. Together, these efforts help ensure that Jewish Cleveland remains safe, open and welcoming.

And behind every advancement – from innovative technology to the trained officers protecting our institutions – stands the donor. Your gift to the Federation’s annual Campaign for Jewish Needs makes these efforts possible. Your generosity ensures that our community approaches Jewish life with confidence, resilience, and joy.
