Finding Strength, Confidence, and Community in Jewish Cleveland

When Rachel* first walked into the Mandel Jewish Community Center two years ago, she was stepping outside her comfort zone. She had not exercised in years, knew no one and felt intimidated by the idea of joining a fitness class.

Today, Rachel is a familiar face in the pool, participating in water exercise classes five days a week, building friendships, and challenging herself to reach new goals.

Rachel’s journey reflects the impact of accessible, welcoming spaces where people can build confidence, improve their well-being, and find meaningful connections. Through the support of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland's annual Campaign for Jewish Needs, community members like Rachel can access experiences that strengthen both individuals and the broader Jewish community.

In her first water aerobics classes, Rachel was quiet and focused, concentrating on learning new exercises and developing her skills. While the physical challenges were significant, navigating a new social environment was equally difficult. But she kept showing up, remaining committed to her goals, and gradually becoming more comfortable.

Over time, her initial reserve gave way to smiles, friendly conversations, and a sense of belonging. Her dedication has helped her build strength, develop new skills, and form connections with fellow class members. She has even become comfortable enough to joke with her instructor about counting mistakes and the choice of exercises.

“Rachel is not the same person who first started at the Mandel JCC,” her instructor shared. “She has become an incredibly friendly and funny woman who gives her best effort in every class. Her discipline and determination to learn more and continually move forward have never changed.”

Rachel’s growth is evident not only in her participation but also in her willingness to take on new challenges. Recently, her instructor spotted her practicing water jogging in the deep end of the pool with a flotation belt before class. Rachel explained that she was preparing to join the deep-water exercise class, setting a new goal for herself and taking the initiative to achieve it.

Her instructor now looks to Rachel as a role model for other participants. When a new student joined the class, the instructor encouraged her to stand near Rachel, whose form, alignment and focus demonstrate what can be accomplished through consistent effort.

For Rachel, the Mandel JCC has become more than a place to exercise. It is a place where she feels comfortable, has built relationships and continues to discover what she can accomplish.

“I am so impressed by how hard she works every day,” her instructor said. “She motivates me and others by her example, her humility, and her constant striving to grow.”

Through the generosity of annual Campaign donors, the community helps sustain programs and welcoming spaces at the Mandel JCC where people of all ages can prioritize their well-being, build meaningful relationships, and discover new possibilities. Rachel’s experience is one example of how community support helps create opportunities for people to grow, connect, and thrive.
