Jewish Cleveland Is Its People

Tags: Federation

As you know, Cleveland is widely recognized as one of the most caring and vibrant Jewish communities in the world. Wherever we travel for our work on behalf of Jewish Cleveland, we are asked repeatedly – what’s the secret to Cleveland’s success?

The answer to that question is actually quite simple (and not a secret): Jewish Cleveland is its people.

Jewish Cleveland is able to do the hard work required to build and maintain a strong and growing community because of the personal connections we have with each other and the respect that we have for one another. It’s our parents and grandparents – and their friends who became extended family to us. It’s our friends from childhood, as well as the new friends we have made along the way.

Some of these connections span generations and take us back to old neighborhoods, family favorite restaurants, school teams and clubs, summer camps, synagogues, youth groups, and other events and landmarks in our collective memories. We remember those times with nostalgia and still feel those human connections deeply, even when our families and friend groups have grown in seemingly different directions.

Combined, these connections provide both a strong foundation for our diverse community and a powerful force that drives Jewish Cleveland forward. They unite us in a way that helps to insulate us from divisive forces or differing opinions. They are at the heart of what makes Jewish Cleveland uniquely special.

So, as we enter the holiday season, let us keep these connections top of mind as we ask ourselves these timeless questions:

  • Who have I been this past year?
  • What kind of person do I want to become?
  • How have I contributed to my community and the world around me?
  • Have I hurt anyone with my words or actions?
  • Where have I fallen short—and how can I make amends?
We know that in times of challenge and celebration alike, we are strongest when we stand together – connected and focused on supporting one another, lifting each other up, and working hand in hand to build a better future.

In a time when antisemitism and hate are on the rise – both here and around the world – our connectedness and respect for one another is critical to our ability to confront the hatred that is targeting Jews today. The Jewish people have always drawn resilience from unity, and today that unity is more vital than ever as those who seek to destroy us first look to divide us. Unified does not mean uniform. We are taught by Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks z”l that we need to care about each other, not agree with each other.

At the same time, our expansive tapestry of personal connections ensures that we remain committed to caring for those most vulnerable, ensuring that no one in our community is left behind. It also reaffirms our deep and enduring connection to the people of Israel, whose character inspire us every day.

As we begin this New Year, we hope this sense of connection renews your spirit and motivates you to continue to take action. Whether you volunteer your time, share your talents, or make a gift to our community’s annual campaign, your involvement strengthens Jewish Cleveland – helping us meet today’s needs while building for tomorrow.

HaYom HaRat Olam – today the world is created. Thank you for being part of creating our world. May this New Year be filled with meaning, healing, and connection. May it inspire us all to lead with kindness, act with courage, and dream with hope. And may our hostages be returned home now.

We wish you and your loved ones a sweet, healthy, and peaceful New Year. Shanah Tovah U’Metukah.
