With profound sadness we regret to report the death of beloved community leader Alvin Siegal (z"l).

“Al was first and foremost a mensch. He was a dedicated and generous member of the community, who made a real difference,” said Stephen H. Hoffman, President

Our thoughts are with the entire Siegal family. May Alvin’s memory be for a blessing.

It is with heavy heart, but deep gratitude for all of his generosity, that we recognize the passing of Alvin Siegal Tuesday morning at the age of 95. Alvin and his loving wife Laura were the primary benefactors for the Laura and Alvin Siegal Lifelong Learning Program at Case Western Reserve University. The institution maintains Laura and Alvin’s vision, set with our program’s inception six years ago, to enrich life in Northeast Ohio by connecting adult learners to the university.

While his philanthropic contributions to many causes are well known, I do hope that all of our friends will remember Alvin as I do, a gentle soul, offering a friendly welcoming smile, who cared deeply about our community in Northeast Ohio. Even in the past few years, when his physical health waned, Alvin and Laura still found time to participate in lifelong learning events, and it was always a special occasion for us when they joined our programs.

Without offering a full biography, I do want to share that Alvin’s support for lifelong learning derived not merely from recognizing the value that our programs offer to our constituents and the role that such institutions play in strengthening the very fabric of our community, but that he and Laura came to this realization through personal experience. Active participation in adult education spurred them to generously lend their name to an institution of higher learning devoted to serving our local community, demonstrating through personal example the value of a commitment to a life of learning and growth through knowledge. We honor Alvin's legacy by continually striving to emulate the model that he and Laura have set for us.

May his memory be a blessing for us all.
