The Jewish Federation of Cleveland issued the following statement in response to the ceasefire resolution voted on yesterday by Cleveland City Council:

“There is nothing the Jewish people want more than peace.

“While we acknowledge the time and consideration that Cleveland City Council has put into this matter, it is hurtful that Council decided to move forward with a ceasefire resolution on the same day Hamas refused to agree to yet another actual ceasefire agreement.

“No less than six ceasefire agreements have been brokered by the United States and other international partners that Israel was willing to accept. Hamas has rejected each one because it refuses to return the remaining innocent people it took hostage when it attacked Israel on October 7, 2023.

“By not accurately reflecting those facts in the resolution it passed, Cleveland City Council has unintentionally given credence to the hateful rhetoric targeting the Jewish community that has overtaken the ‘public comments’ portion of the Council meetings each week since Hamas attacked Israel.

“We pray for the day when Israelis and Palestinians can live in peace and without the threat of violence. We join all those mourning the loss of an innocent loved one in Israel and in Gaza.”
