"The Golden Age" Exhibition Open House and Curator Talk
Join us for an exhibition open house featuring the Roe Green Gallery's latest exhibition, “The Golden Age” by Shlomo Katz and curated by Matthew Garson.
Israeli artist Shlomo Katz’s career spanned from the 1970s until his untimely death in 1992. Inspired by medieval icons and oriental miniatures, Katz developed an original technique of painting by applying oil on top of gold leaf. The result was a combination of deep vibrant colors combined with a metallic surface that glowed, forming a totally new modern image filled with light. His artistic style and preoccupation with beauty and aesthetics is deeply rooted in the European culture in which he was born, while distancing him from what other contemporary artists created in Israel at that time.

Shlomo Katz: Master Printmaker
Jane Glaubinger, Ph.D., curator of prints (retired) for the Cleveland Museum of Art, will discuss the techniques used by Shlomo Katz in creating his renowned screenprint portfolios. “The Golden Age” exhibition includes the Passover, Four Seasons, and Psyche portfolios. The metallic inks of the golden tones and the importance of absolute registration presented just part of the challenge of creating the work, but the Katz screenprints became the ultimate in modern printmaking.

*In 1948, David Ben-Gurion became the face of a great new generation of Jews. His single-minded passion for the Jewish people is as much a part of his legacy as is the State of Israel itself. Today, the Ben-Gurion Society (BGS) embodies that legacy: young men and women combining their knowledge, passion, and resources to build a strong and responsible Jewish community, at home, in Israel, and around the world. The Ben-Gurion Society includes all donors, ages 22-45, who commit a minimum gift of $1,000 to the annual Campaign for Jewish Needs.
