If you can read, you can fly… Marc knows this and that’s why, for the past decade, he’s made the trek each week through city neighborhoods, across a concrete playground to an inner city school. As a volunteer tutor, he reads books with kids.
“These are great kids who are struggling in school. How can we let them be left behind in society? To have a chance, they have to be able to read.”
One year, he met a boy named Deron, and they worked together on reading skills – on life skills – for three years. They lost touch after Deron went to high school but Marc always wondered what happened to the boy he spent so much time with. So, he called. Deron wasn’t home. He had started college; he was a freshman at Kent State.
“I felt great for me a little, and a lot for him,” Marc shared, “Now he’s really going places. What we do makes a difference.”
