In the late 1940's, cousins Rachelle Malcmacher Korland and Anne Malcmacher Adelman; Fran Dorfsman Spike; Edie Miller Block; Ruth Bergrin Gordon; and Shirley Frum Cohen were born in Feldafing, the largest “Displaced Persons” (DP) camp in Germany created for Holocaust survivors. For nearly 70 years, these six women have remained friends. In fact, at least once a month, these Jewish Clevelanders get together for lunch, dinner, or just to talk.

The Jewish Federation of Cleveland announced that Adrienne Goldberg of Pepper Pike was awarded the 2019 Ruby Bass Challenge Award, the organization’s most prestigious award for women philanthropists. Goldberg was honored with the award at the Federation’s Women’s Philanthropy Signature Event on October 30.

This summer my husband and I had the privilege to attend a Jewish Federation of Cleveland Mission to St. Petersburg, Russia and Israel. I am a native Clevelander and my husband is from Dayton. As empty nesters we recently moved to Cleveland from Dayton for work and be closer to family.

When Rachel “Ruchie” Freier was approaching 30 years old, she was done being a legal secretary. During a get-together before Passover that year, she announced to her friends she was going to college and would become a lawyer.

The Jewish Federation of Cleveland announced today that Judith Wolkoff, an active volunteer with the Transplant House of Cleveland, is the 2019 recipient of the Irene Zehman Award. Each year, the Federation recognizes an unsung Jewish woman or group of women who demonstrate the highest ideals and practices of volunteer service on behalf of the Jewish and/or general community. Wolkoff, a Pepper Pike resident, will be honored at the Federation’s Women’s Philanthropy Spring Brunch on June 2 at 11:45 am at Landerhaven (6111 Landerhaven Drive, Mayfield Heights).
