On the morning of Saturday, January 15th, the Shabbat service at Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, TX, was hijacked by an armed terrorist, who took the rabbi and three congregation members hostage. The ordeal lasted approximately 11 hours, as local and federal law enforcement tried to negotiate a peaceful resolution. Fortunately, all who were being held at gunpoint made it out alive, thanks in large part to the active-shooter training the rabbi had received.

This horrifying attack on yet another Jewish house of worship is further evidence of the rapidly rising level of antisemitism and overt acts of Jew hatred in the United States. It is critical that our community implore Congress to double its funding of FEMA’s Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP). Through this program, all faith-based institutions can get financial support needed to cover physical security costs, including cameras, reinforced doors, and the like. There is no question that the time for this level of funding is now.

Help keep houses of worship for all faiths in Cleveland and across the country safe. Contact your members of Congress now and urge them to double NSGP funding this year!
