Stephen H. Hoffman’s Legacy
Stephen H. Hoffman has served as President of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland since 1983. Through his deep commitment and passion, he has elevated all areas of the work of the Federation during his tenure. His leadership has enabled the Federation to anticipate the ever-changing needs of our community in Cleveland and around the world.
Stephen Hoffman began his career at the Jewish Federation of Cleveland in 1974, and served as director of social planning and research and assistant director, before becoming the CEO in 1983. Stephen’s impact has been national and international in scope. He was the founding director of the Council for Initiatives in Jewish Education. From 2001-2004, he was “loaned” by Cleveland to serve as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Jewish Federations of North America, the national umbrella organization of the federation movement. In 2004, he was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve on the United States delegation to the Conference on Anti-Semitism, held in Berlin, Germany, by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). He is a founder and past co-chair of the Secure Community Network, a national organization concerned with communal security issues and preparedness. He also served as interim president of the Jewish People Policy Institute (Jerusalem), an international policy think tank based in Jerusalem.
Stephen serves on the President’s Visiting Committee of Case Western Reserve University. He is a board member of the Musical Arts Association (the Cleveland Orchestra), the Jack, Joseph & Morton Mandel Foundation, the David and Inez Myers Foundation, and the Maltz Foundation. He also has served in a number of leadership positions for United Way Services.

To celebrate 35 years of distinguished leadership as the President of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, The Stephen H. Hoffman Endowed Professorship of Hebrew Language at Case Western Reserve University and The Stephen H. Hoffman Hebrew Fund at the Jewish Federation of Cleveland are being established in his honor.
Why Hebrew?
In 1987, Stephen Hoffman visited the former Soviet Union where, in secret, he met with students and teachers of the Hebrew language. Despite the risk of imprisonment if caught studying Hebrew, this community was dedicated to maintaining this ancient and beautiful language. Stephen was moved and inspired by their courage and passion. He returned to Cleveland with a renewed commitment to promoting Jewish education and Hebrew language literacy for people of all ages and backgrounds.
Hebrew is the language of the Jewish People, and for centuries, the way in which Jewish culture and history has been passed down from generation to generation.
The Hebrew language teaches values and beliefs that unite and sustain the Jewish community. Through understanding Hebrew, we know that the past and the future are connected; the word ‘before,’ ‘kedem,’ and ‘forward,’ ‘kadima,’ come from the very same root.
This is just one example that helps us connect to our history while also planning for a brighter future.
What is an Endowed Professorship?
An Endowed Professorship represents a commitment by a university to an area of scholarship and is a statement of long term institutional priority. Endowed Professorships strengthen a university’s capacities in research and education and ensure that academic work of the highest caliber will continue in perpetuity in a designated field of study.
The Stephen H. Hoffman Endowed Professorship of Hebrew Language at Case Western Reserve University will create a legacy of professors, scholars, and educators of Hebrew language at CWRU and in the greater Cleveland community. The Endowed Professorship of Hebrew Language will be situated in the Department of Modern Languages and Literature and will be a leader in the interdisciplinary Judaic Studies program. This Endowed Professorship will provide the university with a means of attracting and honoring exceptional faculty members in the field of Hebrew Language.
Creating an Endowed Professorship in Stephen’s name pays tribute to his values of intellectual pursuits and higher education, as well as his commitment to Hebrew and Jewish learning. This professorship will provide meaningful opportunities for CWRU students and staff and will foster a deeper connection between the University and the Cleveland Jewish community and Israel.
The Stephen H. Hoffman Hebrew Fund
The Stephen H. Hoffman Hebrew Fund, a fund of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, will be used to support a broad array of programs and experiences for all ages that promote the Hebrew language. Opportunities may include: leadership development through the lens of Hebrew; Hebrew immersion programs; arts and culture; experiential education such as camp programs; and travel to Israel.
