For more than 25 years, with generous support from the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, Bellefaire JCB has provided licensed, culturally sensitive therapists to Jewish day schools across Cleveland. These counselors ensure that students, families and educators have access to mental health support rooted in understanding and compassion.
Among the many children whose lives have been touched by this program is Miriam*, a bright and curious kindergartener whose story embodies the power of early intervention and community support.
When Miriam began kindergarten at one of our local day schools, she had difficulty connecting with her classmates. While other children played together at recess, Miriam often sat alone, unsure how to join in. Recognizing that she needed extra support, the school’s Bellefaire JCB therapist began meeting with her weekly. Their sessions focused on building Miriam’s confidence, helping her develop age-appropriate social skills and learning how to communicate more comfortably with her peers.
The therapist also partnered closely with Miriam’s parents, sharing strategies to use at home and offering guidance to make daily routines smoother. Together, they created a consistent plan that supported Miriam both at school and at home.
Over time, small but meaningful changes began to appear. Miriam started greeting her classmates in the morning and joining group activities. She grew more confident, expressive and began to see school as a safe, joyful place.
To help her continue progressing, Miriam’s therapist recommended additional outpatient counseling at Bellefaire JCB. With the support of Bellefaire’s team, her parents made the thoughtful decision for her to repeat kindergarten, giving her another year to strengthen the skills she had worked so hard to build.
Now, one year later, Miriam’s transformation is remarkable. She has close friends, participates eagerly in class, and greets each day with confidence and excitement – a reflection of the nurturing care that surrounded her.
Through the collaboration of Bellefaire JCB, the day school, the Jewish Federation of Cleveland and her dedicated family, Miriam received not only tools for growth but the foundation for a brighter future. Her story is a testament to what’s possible when a community invests in the emotional well-being of its children.
Thanks to your support of the community’s annual Campaign for Jewish Needs, students like Miriam have access to counseling that meets their unique needs – whether they’re navigating social challenges, anxiety, new transitions or something else.
Investing in the emotional well-being of our children is vital. Your generosity makes it possible.
