New Drone Program Brings Cutting-Edge Security to Camp Wise

This summer, JFC Security, LLC – Jewish Federation of Cleveland’s security provider – introduced a new layer of protection at Mandel JCC’s Camp Wise through a cutting-edge drone security pilot program. Operated by JFC Security personnel, the tethered drone system is part of JFC Security’s ongoing effort to incorporate emerging technologies that can further enhance safety across community spaces.

“This is part of our commitment to maximizing security technology to help keep our community safe,” said Jim Hartnett, the David P. Miller director of community security for JFC Security, LLC,. “We’re always searching for new technologies that can improve safety and protect our community so that they can live an open and vibrant Jewish life. This isn’t about reacting to a specific threat. It’s about being thoughtful and prepared.”

The drone provides real-time, high-resolution visibility across the camp’s wide perimeter. “We’ve been impressed by the strength of the camera system,” said Jim. “It allows us to monitor large areas from a distance and support our security team on the ground more effectively and efficiently.”

For Neil Waxman, chair of Federation’s security committee, the addition of this drone technology to the Camp Wise security plan reflects the committee’s forward-looking approach. “Our job is to anticipate what’s next and invest in the tools that keep our community safe,” he said. “This kind of innovation helps protect the people and places that matter most.”

The drone complements other recent enhancements at Camp Wise, including the addition of a guard gate and increased access controls. While the technology is sophisticated, it’s intentionally low-profile on site. “Our goal is to offer reassurance without disrupting the camp experience,” said Jim.

“We’re incredibly grateful for Federation’s guidance in strengthening our security infrastructure,” said Rabbi Dan Utley, director of Camp Wise. “It’s reassuring to know we have this level of support and expertise on site.”

Waxman noted that most campers are either unaware of the drone or feel safer knowing it’s there. “We’re striking the right balance between vigilance and peace of mind,” he said.

Looking ahead, the pilot offers valuable insights for potential use at other Federation-supported sites. With its mobility and high-performance surveillance capabilities, the drone represents a powerful new tool in helping to keep the entire Jewish Cleveland community safe.

“This project came together through meaningful collaboration,” said Waxman. “Federation, JFC Security, and other key partners played a role. That kind of teamwork helps to make our community stronger and more secure.”
