Our Light, Unity, and Resolve this Chanukah

Tags: Federation

As the first Chanukah candle was kindled last night, we were reminded of the enduring power of hope, the triumph of light over darkness, and the strength that comes from unity. As we gather together with our family and friends, against a backdrop of tragic news over the past 32 hours, our community’s spirit shines brightly and provides light and warmth to those in need.

As we’ve stated numerous times, you are what makes Jewish Cleveland – whether it be through volunteering, acts of kindness both big and small, and through tzedakah. You are the ones that illuminate our path, ensuring that vital security, services, education, and support reach every corner of our community. In a season defined by light, you have helped us kindle countless flames of hope and possibility.

Yet, as we celebrate this year, we also mourn. We mourn the horrific shooting at Brown University and the horrific terrorist attack at Bondi Beach in Australia, where a Jewish menorah lighting was targeted. These events are stark reminders of the senseless violence that permeates the world today. All of us are affected by this – no one is immune.

Though we know no evidence to suggest that the Brown University attack was hate inspired, such incidents nonetheless shake our confidence in the safety of our children. We remain steadfast in our efforts to protect college students, ensuring their safety and well-being as they pursue knowledge in environments that must be free from fear and hate.

To the families of those whose lives have been stolen by terror, we send our deepest condolences and stand in unwavering solidarity. To those who have been injured, we pray for your complete and total healing (refuah shleimah). And we remain steadfast in our solidarity with the Jewish people everywhere in the world.

Here in Cleveland, our security provider – JFC Security, LLC – has been working with law enforcement to be on heightened alert for any possible action against our community. Area police have increased patrols around Jewish facilities and throughout our neighborhoods. JFC Security has been in touch with the FBI who advised they are monitoring groups here locally and will relay any pertinent information if they determine a potential threat to our community. At the present time, there is no known threat.

We are blessed to live in an area where local law enforcement cares so deeply for the safety of all citizens. You can help them by calling 911 immediately if you see or hear anything that seems out of place or out of the ordinary.

Chanukah was born out of tragedy. Our people had every reason to give up – instead we searched for light, from which we found strength and pride. Today, our resolve remains the same.

We will not be deterred by acts of violence or intimidation. We will not stop building a vibrant future rooted in safety, dignity, and acceptance for all. And we will not be silent or cower in the face of hate – we will raise our voices, confront hate, and foster an environment where every member of our community can thrive without fear.

In the glow of the menorah, we still find powerful symbolism for our times. Each candle we light dispels a little more darkness, just as each act of kindness, solidarity, and generosity from our community brightens the lives of those around us. Our unity is our strength, and together, we serve as a source of resilience and optimism for Cleveland and beyond.

As Chanukah unfolds, let us be inspired by the courage of our ancestors and the enduring message of this holiday: that even in the darkest moments, a single light can ignite hope and transform the world. Together, we will ensure that our community remains a source of strength, unity, and compassion.

May this Chanukah bring you and your loved ones peace, joy, and renewed purpose. Am Yisrael Chai.
