Shavuot is a holiday celebrating the time when the Jewish people harvested their last grain of the season, and begin harvesting their fruit crops. A tradition is eating dairy foods including cheesecake, blintzes, and quiches to symbolize the kosher food laws in the Torah.

The team at Ellie’s Waffles, Smoothies and Sweets in University Heights are making sure Jewish Cleveland will be well stocked with lots of yummy kosher treats for Shavuot. “We’re here early in the morning to make sure everything comes out fresh,” said owner, Jim Ross. “We’re a family-run business, and we put in a lot of hours here to make sure everything’s ready for the community.”

“We have six different kinds of cheesecakes – dairy and parve – everything from plain to caramel, strawberry or blueberry and even chocolate. It’s a secret family recipe, though. I can’t reveal our ingredients.”

Being part of this community is special to Jim and his family. “When we first opened four years ago, we were so happy with how the community accepted us,” Jim said. “Our first two months, there were lines out of the door. We’re so proud of being here and we love everything about Jewish Cleveland. This is all about the people here; we won’t put anything on the menu unless it absolutely works.”

Have a meaningful Shavuot, Jewish Cleveland!
