Have you ever taken the time to reflect on your primary educational journey? How about the fact that you can read this sentence? Being able to read, write, and comprehend are invaluable skills, and often taken for granted once they are mastered. The aim of the Public Education Initiative is to do just that; bolster the literacy of children in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD), through individualized sessions with our team of dedicated volunteer tutors, and I am elated to be a part of the magic!

Hi, my name is Ally and I have been going to Camp Wise for 5 years. The first time I came to camp I went for 2 weeks and the only thing I remember thinking the entire time was “wow, I wish I could go for a whole month,” but soon, that month turned into my whole summer. I have made lifelong friends with my cabin mates, fellow villagers, counselors, and really the entire camp.

The front page of the New York Times on Friday (yes, I still read it) had a story on how Americans are now looking over their shoulders as they go to work or send their kids off to school. To my eye it read a lot like what I experienced in Israel recently and what I hear from my friends there. And now we are all contemplating the “real story” behind the attack in San Bernardino or whether Paris can happen here.

We recently met a young woman named Yafit, an Ethiopian Jew whose family made Aliyah more than 30 years ago. She is just one of nearly 100,000 Ethiopian Jews who completed the journey – an effort that Cleveland’s own Federation President Steve Hoffman helped initiate. Now, Yafit is paying it forward as a Youth Futures Mentor, a Federation-supported program that provides community-based mentoring for youth in Israel. Read Yafit’s inspiring story here:
