As we prepare for the first Shabbat after New Year's Day 2021, we are reminded of this special blessing – a variation of which can be found in every Jewish prayer book – for our country, its leaders and advisors, and our fellow citizens:

Statement: Riot at the U.S. Capitol Building

We pray for the safety of all Members of Congress, their staff and the law enforcement who are protecting them. We thank Senators Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman, and Governor Mike DeWine for their strong statements and join them in urging an end to the violence. We also unequivocally condemn any elected official trying to advance a position by claiming that Adolf Hitler was “right.” Violent unlawful protests and hate-fueled rhetoric have no place in our democratic society.

Young Family Connects to Judaism Through jHUB

Tags: Federation, Families, Here for Good News

Molly and Steve first learned about jHUB online. They had recently moved to Cleveland (Molly grew up here, but Steve is from the west coast) and were looking to connect. Molly is Jewish, and Steve does not identify with any faith. When they came to Cleveland, they were looking for other similar couples with whom they could connect, so they signed up for the jHUB newsletter and started learning about jHUB events. They came to an event for young adults and were excited to meet other similar couples with whom they could become friends. They also went on the Cleveland Honeymoon Israel trip, and during that that immersive experience they forged strong bonds with 19 other couples. After the trip, Molly and Steve continued to come to jHUB events. They also regularly meet with their Honeymoon Israel friends for Shabbat, book club, and other gatherings.

Personalized Connections through Cleveland Shin Shinim

Each year, the core of @akiva's teen engagement work is our Shin Shinim program, where recent high school graduates from Israel join our community for the year to work with our high school students. The Shin Shinim become integral parts of our community, building relationships with their host families, the schools, and synagogues that they work in, and most of all, with the teens with whom they engage in one-on-one learning.

Celebrating Hebrew Education During COVID-19

Hebrew at @akiva, a Federation beneficiary agency, has evolved into a multifaceted program designed to reach Jewish Cleveland teens on their own time and in a way that works for them as individuals. While some teens choose to come twice a week for two hour classes, others study in person only once a week, finishing the balance of required curriculum online. For many teens, studying Hebrew @akiva allows them to earn high school foreign language credit as well. In either case, one of the hallmarks of @akiva is the personal relationships that we as educators are able to build with our learners and their parents.
